This year’s online publication of the Indiana Code includes several enhancements that will make it easier to search for specific statutes and to read the statutes on a variety of devices.

IC Available as HTML as well as PDF

In the past, the Indiana Code was available online only as a series of pdf documents. Starting with the 2017 version, the content is now displayed as HTML, the same programming language that your web browser uses. This allows you to more easily view the Code from a variety of devices such as smart phones and tablets, because the text will resize and re-format dynamically based on the device you are using at the time. It also lets you copy text straight from the online version of the Code and paste it into other applications, like Word documents or emails. Please note that copy and pasting the HTML code may change semantic formatting, which could differ from the intent of the official Indiana Code Books.
At the same time, you can still view the Code exactly as it is printed in the official Indiana Code Books by clicking the “View Print Version” button. This will open the pdf version of the Code directly within your browser, download a pdf to your desktop, or copy a bookmark that you can paste into other documents.

Search and Navigation Down to the Section Level

Now that the 2017 Indiana Code is displayed as HTML, you can search the Code all the way down to the individual Section level (the pdf version of the Code was only searchable down to the Chapter level). This makes it easier and quicker for you to find the precise portion of the Code you want to see.
When you use the Search tool in the upper right corner of the website, either through the general Search tab or the Code tab, your results will include Section level references.

More Visual Cues for Navigation (Tree and Breadcrumbs)

When viewing the 2017 Indiana Code online, you’ll see a navigation tree on the left hand side of the screen. The “tree” defaults to a list of all Titles, and you can click through to expand the navigation view to show Articles, Chapters and Sections.
To start, click on the light blue bar for an individual Title. You’ll see a list of the Articles within that Title, along with a “+” plus sign. Click on the Article name or the plus sign to reveal the Chapters within that Article. Expand the Chapter in the same way to see the individual Sections. When you click on a Section name, you’ll see that Section displayed to the right and you’ll also retain the full navigation path in the tree to the left.
You can collapse the navigation levels by clicking the “-“ minus symbol or by clicking a second time on the Title bar.
In addition to the navigation tree, we’ve also added “breadcrumbs” at the top of the page where the 2017 Indiana Code is displayed. To the left of the Search, Print, and Reference Material buttons you’ll see a visual history of where you’ve navigated within the Code. If you want to backtrack to previous levels, just click on the Title, Article or Chapter within the breadcrumb.
Breadcrumbs also indicate which version of the “Print Version” you may view or download. The associated .PDF will go down to the same level as indicated by the breadcrumbs. For example, if you are only viewing a “Title” breadcrumb, the Print Version will be that entire Title, where as if the breadcrumbs go down to the Chapter, the .PDF will consist of that Chapter only.

Improved Searching within Titles

The 2017 Indiana Code now includes an enhanced search tool, next to the breadcrumbs at the top of the page. When you enter a key word or phrase, you’ll see matches highlighted in yellow within the Title that you’re currently viewing. The count of matches will be displayed, and you can click on the arrows next to the search field to advance through the matches.

New Features in the Indiana Code

Three new features have been added to the Indiana Code starting with 2017, and these appear in both the online and printed versions.
  • The recodification derivation table information is now available back to 1972.
